Medical Engineering Distinguished Seminar Series, Valeria Caprettini
Nature Biomedical Engineering publishes innovative research at the interface of engineering, biology and medicine, with a focus on technologies and discoveries that advance human health. This seminar will provide an overview of the journal's scope, editorial priorities and decision-making processes, offering insights into what distinguishes manuscripts that are ultimately selected for publication.
The seminar will discuss current trends in biomedical engineering, including advances in bioelectronics, medical devices, neuroengineering, diagnostics, therapeutics, artificial intelligence and translational technologies. Particular attention will be given to evaluating scientific significance, technical rigor, clinical relevance and potential impact. Attendees will gain an understanding of the editorial assessment process, peer review, common reasons for manuscript rejection, and strategies for effectively communicating interdisciplinary research to a broad scientific audience.
Finally, the session will provide an opportunity for discussion about emerging directions in biomedical engineering research and the evolving role of high-impact journals in supporting innovation and translation.
Biography: Dr. Caprettini is a Senior Editor for Nature Biomedical Engineering, and she handles manuscripts in areas such as neuroengineering, bioelectronics, wearables and implantable technologies, medical devices, tissue engineering, micro-physiological systems, organoids.
During her postdoc at King's College London, Valeria developed nanotechnology for tissue engineering by leveraging nanofabrication, physics and materials science. Previously, during her PhD in bioengineering at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia in Genoa, Italy, Valeria conceived and devised a microfluidic device with plasmonic nanostructures for the spatiotemporally controlled poration of cells for the delivery of drugs, for extracellular and intracellular electrical recordings, and for spectroscopic analyses.
